The Birds' Marsh

An exceptional preserved natural area...

Nestled in the heart of the island of Oléron, in the commune of Dolus d'Oléron, the Marais aux Oiseaux is located in a natural area of deciduous woods bordered by former salt marshes.

More than 60 species and 500 animals enjoy this unique environment, a real haven for a multitude of bird species, both migratory and sedentary.

The tour begins with a visit to a mini-farm where children can meet familiar birds. A few hundred metres further on, several species from the region can be observed in their natural environment (ducks, geese, herons, birds of prey, etc.). A 9-metre high observatory offers a panoramic view of the surrounding landscape and facilitates observation of the wild birds that frequent the area.

The Marais aux Oiseaux also houses a rescue centre, not accessible to the public, which takes in injured or sick animals, around 400 per year. They are cared for by vets and then released back into the wild.
