Saint-Georges d'Oléron is the largest and oldest commune on the island of Oléron.

 

 

The beaches

With its 16 kilometres of beaches, spread over the west coast, also known as the wild coast, and the quieter east coast, Saint-Georges d'Oléron is the ideal destination for lovers of idleness, swimming and water sports.

There are numerous cycle paths to the various beaches of Saint Georges d'Oléron.

Located near the La Boulinière campsite, the Sables Vignier beach, which has remained wild, is without doubt one of the most beautiful on the island, ideal for families thanks to its supervision.

 

 

The villages of Saint-Georges d'Oléron

Saint-Georges d'Oléron is made up of 7 villages with a strong character, typical and authentic villages to discover on foot or by bike: Boyardville, Sauzelle, Les Sables-Vignier, Domino, Chaucre, Le Douhet and Foulerot/Plaisance.

The two harbours, Boyardville and Le Douhet, welcome boaters and are the starting point for walks and cruises at sea.

 

 

The village

The village of Saint-Georges d'Oléron has the oldest and most remarkable building on the island with its Romanesque church, classified as a Historic Monument since 1931. Its current nave, fortified against invasions, dates from the 11th century. Victim of the wars of religion in the 16th and 17th centuries, looted and mutilated on many occasions, it has benefited from a major restoration since 1968.

In the centre of the village, the magnificent slate-roofed covered market of Saint-Georges d'Oléron, dating from the end of the 19th century, is enthroned.

In the square, beautiful bourgeois houses from the end of the 19th century testify to the prosperity of trade at that time.
