The Chassiron lighthouse

Take a step up !

Located on the point of the same name, once called "the end of the world", the 150 year old Chassiron lighthouse allows sailors to enter the waters of the Antioch channel, which is strewn with reefs and renowned for its many shipwrecks.

With its three black stripes, it looks like a convict! Originally white, its tower was painted in 1926 to differentiate it from the Baleines lighthouse on the Ile de Ré.

46 metres high, the Chassiron lighthouse promises a breathtaking spectacle if you climb its 224 steps to reach the lantern. You will be able to admire La Rochelle, the islands of Ré and Aix, Oléron in all its length, Fort Boyard and the ocean as far as the eye can see!

The lighthouse is home to a show trail entitled "The people of the coast between land and sea", a real "living" tour, retracing the story of a young shipwrecked man and the life of the islanders between fishing and farming.

At the foot of the lighthouse, the visit continues in the heart of the gardens, which won a gold medal at the 2008 Victoires du Paysage and have been awarded the "remarkable garden" label. The gardens represent a compass rose and retrace the history of the headland as well as the maritime and agricultural past of the island through plant beds, vegetable gardens and educational tools.
